Even if a company is laidback on the dress code, you shouldn’t show up wearing something casual. This means absolutely no shorts, t-shirts, flip flops, sneakers, jeans, or hats. If the interview doesn’t call for a suit, you still want to look professional and well put together. Opt for a pair of dress pants and a collared shirt. Women may also choose a conservative dress or pencil skirt. Women shouldn’t wear anything short, low-cut or revealing.
Loud Colors & Prints
You may think wearing something bold will make you stand out. Well, it might, but not in a good way. When dressing for an interview, you want to keep it simple, conservative and professional. Don’t wear any loud colors or busy patterns, as they can be distracting. Always stick to neutral colors, such black, blue, gray and white. For instance, a pair of charcoal dress pants, a white collared shirt, a black tie, and black shoes would be appropriate. Everything you wear should be a solid color, with the exception of a simple patterned tie.
Like your clothes, you don’t want your accessories to be distracting. You want the interviewer to focus on you and not what you’re wearing. If you must wear jewelry, stick to the classic staples, such as a simple watch and wedding band.
